Chris Cantell Discusses Computer Science: Investigation on bid
by Claudia Sonea

Have you heard about Comcast Corp? If you didn't, you haven't lost much. As the largest US cable TV operator and second Internet provider, Comcast thinks it is almighty and can interfere in the consumer's personal use of the Internet. This issue burst out in October last year when the Associated Press made nationwide tests revealing the fact that on the Comcast network subscribers cannot use eDonke, Gnutella and BitTorrent networks. At that time the reason given by the company was that it has nothing to do with data discrimination, but rather with the speed of the Internet and they think they haven't broke any laws; therefore the investigation of the top U.S. communications regulator (U.S. Federal Communications Commission) is without legal authority. On the one side, on Tuesday, Kevin Martin, FCC Chairman, announced an investigation of Comcast Corp about the subversive tactics the company used to restrict Internet users. The Senate Commerce Committee will decide if the investigation has grounds or not, in the context that Martin exposed of taking in count consumers' complaints. He added that it is suspicious that Comcast refused to present to customers and application developers details about traffic on its network. On the other side, Comcast defended by saying that they merely used a system that would deal the congestion created on the network, for the consumer's own good. Furthermore, the company will cooperate with BitTorrent and others to come up with a legislation consumers and Internet service providers. In its support came Kyle McSlarrow, head of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, who also thinks they should be allowed to make their own decisions when it comes congestion and the file-sharing of pirated files and in fact they assure that everything goes well for their consumers. What do you think?
